Free Websites - You Get What You Pay For |

As a professional website designer, I have a habit of going to websites to get ideas and trends, etc. Sometimes I am horrified at what I see.
Last night I stumbled upon a website for a restaurant in the area. I had the speakers of my computer on, which is something I don't typically do. Within a few seconds, I was scraping myself from the ceiling. My wife just looked at me and said "What was THAT?" I couldn't get the sound off quick enough.
Once I settled down, I noticed the poor design. It had a background of a picture, that was repeated hundreds of times in the screen. The navigation was poor, the site had misspelled words and was just not pleasing.
I scrolled to the bottom to see who designed this site. It was a "Website in a Can" where you design it yourself for free. In return, they get to put advertising on your site.
As a professional business, I would think you'd want to represent your company with a solid website. One that your customers will want to visit. One that is appealing and informative. The cost of a website is part of your advertising. And taken over a period of time is less expensive than other forms of advertising.
So remember, when it comes to free websites, you get what you pay for. |

Should Cousin Joey Design Your Website? |

Would you let Cousin Joey lay the foundation of your house when he's not a qualified contractor? Probably not. So why would you let Cousin Joey build your website? Just as the foundation of your house supports the structure of your house, a website needs to be a solid support of your business. Something thrown together by someone who doesn't totally understand website design is going to look cheap. And CHEAP is not something you want to be a first impression of your business. This goes for Churches as well. Churches so often have someone in the congregation who is like Cousin Joey and thinks they can design the website. Nine times out of ten, this isn't going to look very good. The web design for the church looks cheap, bad colors, doesn't flow and broken links. Even worse for a church is that once people realize you need a quality site, feelings get hurt if you hire someone to redo the website. Or worse yet, Cousin Joey leaves the church and suddenly you don't have anyone to maintain your site. |

Who Uses the Yellow Pages? |

The other day the Yellow Pages were delivered to my doorstep. I don't know how they get there, as I don't order them. They just show up once a year. And each year I do the same thing, throw it in the garbage. There was a time when people lived by the Yellow Pages. If you needed a repairman, you let your fingers do the walking. They were very useful in their time. Today, if I need anything, I don't let my fingers do the walking. I let my good friend Google do the walking for me. I simply type in what I want and Google gives me a list of "results". So, for me, if a company doesn't have a web presence, I will not find them. |
